Federation of Muslim Women Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN), has advocated for introduction of stringent measures against those who engage in human trafficking, especially of children.
The Association noted that even when offenders are caught, they were not penalized, rather the abused children suffered.
This position was canvassed by the FOMWAN’s National President, Hajiya Halima Jubril while speaking to officials of the United States Embassy, who were at its headquarters, in Abuja.
“The issues surrounding out of school children, almajiri and drugs problems among our youth should not be left for government alone.
“And Non Governmental Organisations like us should focus on these fundamental issues threatening our society,” she stressed.
Similarly, the Chairperson, Election, Governance, Human Rights and Gender Issues Committee of FOMWAN, Hajya Farida Saleh Yusuf decried that Nigeria is yet to domesticate the Child Rights Act.
She reiterated the need to collaborate with the United States of America in tackling the menace of child labour, almajiri and drug abuse among the youth.
According to her, the myriad of problems bedeviling Nigeria children due to early exposure on street life, as hawkers is making nonsense of the future generation.
She therefore called for enactment of strong laws that will be able to deter erring parents and others who engage in child labour.
