The National Assembly adjourned plenary yesterday to morn the late Senator representing Bauchi South, Aliyu Wakili, who was reported to have slumped in his residence in Gwarinpa Area of Abuja on Saturday.
Shortly after resumption of plenary, the Senate adjourned plenary as a mark of respect for the senator, in line with the tradition of the red chamber, while the valedictory session for the late senator will take place today in the senate.
Coming under order 43 of the Senate’s standing Rules, the Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan, called on the Senate to observe a minute silence in honour of the deceased.
He also asked that the Senate suspend plenary for the day in line with the tradition of the National Assembly, which was adopted by the lawmakers through a voice vote.
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, in a short comment reminded his colleagues of a valedictory service in honour of the deceased slated for Wednesday, asking them to dress appropriately for the occasion.
Wakili who until his death was the Chairman of Senate Committee on Poverty Alleviation slumped on Saturday morning and was rushed to a nearby hospital in the Gwarimpa district of Abuja but gave up the ghost before he could get emergency treatment.
The deceased Senator was 58 and a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. Ali Wakili was born in 1960. He is an indigene of Bauchi State.
He attended Lere Primary School in 1972, he then proceeded to Government Secondary School, Damaturu, Yobe state, where he obtained his senior Certificate.
He then proceeded to Bauchi College for Arts and Science in 1979. For his University Education, he attended Bayero University, kano where he obtained a Bachelors degree in Arts in1982.
He also attended Nigerian Customs training school, lagos in 1984 and the infantry centre and school, jaji in 1991. Ali Wakili was also a retired controller of the Nigeria Customs Service.
In the 2015 elections he contested for the Bauchi South senatorial seat and won on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Until his death, he had as his legislative Interests; finance, revenue, appropriation, security, works, Agriculture and Education.
