The National Assembly (NASS) of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the country’s security architecture through legislative support, improved funding, and robust oversight of defence operations.
This assurance was given by the Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, during a press briefing in Abuja on Saturday.
Agbese stated that the legislature would continue to work closely with the executive arm to enhance the capacity of the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies in tackling terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and related crimes.
He was reacting to a recent террорист attack on troops of the Nigerian Army in Benisheikh, Borno State, which led to the death of Oseni Braimah and other personnel.
The lawmaker commended the bravery and sacrifices of frontline troops, describing them as patriots dedicated to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
He disclosed that defence and security remain a top priority in the National Assembly’s legislative agenda, with a focus on ensuring adequate budgetary allocations, improved welfare for military personnel, and enhanced intelligence-gathering systems.
Agbese also stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in defence spending, noting that lawmakers are committed to ensuring effective utilisation of resources through diligent oversight.
According to him, timely release of funds for the procurement of critical military equipment would significantly improve ongoing operations against insurgents and other criminal elements.
He further called on Nigerians to support security agencies by providing credible and timely information, emphasising that the fight against insecurity requires collective effort.
Agbese expressed optimism that sustained collaboration among the legislature, executive, and security agencies would ultimately restore peace and stability across affected parts of the country.
