The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has vowed to intensify its grassroots mobilization ahead of the 2027 general elections despite an alleged attack on its members during a meeting in Enugu State.
The opposition party alleged that its members were attacked by individuals it described as “state-sponsored thugs” while holding a grassroots meeting in Obuoffia Ward, Nkanu West Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, Esq., the party condemned the incident, describing it as an attempt to intimidate its members and restrict their participation in the democratic process.
The NDC maintained that its members have a constitutional right to assemble peacefully, organize political activities and mobilize support for the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to the party, the latest incident is part of a disturbing pattern of attacks allegedly targeting opposition activities in the South-East.
The party recalled that its members had previously experienced two alleged attacks in Imo State during a town hall meeting and a consultation visit by its senatorial candidate, Uche Onyeagocha.
The NDC expressed concern over what it described as the alleged failure of security agencies to respond promptly to attacks involving opposition supporters in Enugu and other parts of the South-East.
It consequently called on relevant security authorities to investigate the Enugu incident, identify those behind the alleged attack and prosecute both the perpetrators and anyone found to have sponsored them.
The party also accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State of becoming increasingly concerned about the NDC’s alleged growing grassroots support.
The NDC, however, said the alleged attack would not weaken its resolve to participate actively in the 2027 electoral process.
“This incessant assault on our members by state-sponsored thugs must stop,” the party said, insisting that intimidation would not prevent it from organizing and mobilizing across the state.
The opposition party declared that it would continue its grassroots activities and defend what it described as the democratic space.
“The NDC will not be cowed. We will continue to organize, mobilize, and defend the democratic space,” it said.
