NDMG accuses Malami of politicising northwest insecurity

The Northwest Democracy Monitoring Group has accused a former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, of attempting to exploit insecurity in the region for political gain.

The group, in a strongly worded statement on Sunday, described Malami’s recent petition as “baseless” and “a reckless attempt to incite chaos.”

Its chairman, Abubakar Sani, said political opportunists were preying on the suffering of citizens in Zamfara and Kebbi States to regain lost relevance.

He accused Malami of lacking a track record of development in the Northwest, aside from constructing a single prison, while critical projects like the Abuja–Kano Expressway were neglected during his tenure under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“The petition is not only baseless but represents a reckless attempt to exploit insecurity for personal ambition,” Sani said.

He urged the Inspector General of Police, the National Security Adviser, and the Department of State Services to investigate Malami’s activities, stressing that his arrest and prosecution would serve as a deterrent to others.

The NDMG maintained that the safety of communities should never be turned into a political pawn, insisting that leaders must prioritise accountability, transparency, and genuine efforts to address insecurity.

It vowed to continue monitoring the political landscape in the Northwest to ensure that opportunistic politicians are held accountable.
