The National Democratic Party (NDP) has affirmed Hon. Ochigbo Mathew, an Idoma-born politician and philanthropist, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Benue State.

Mathew emerged unopposed during the party’s governorship primary election held on Thursday in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

The NDP is currently the only political party in the state to have selected an Idoma candidate as its governorship flagbearer for the 2027 election.

Speaking after his emergence, Mathew described the endorsement as a call to service and pledged to pursue policies that would promote inclusive governance, economic growth, and social cohesion across Benue State.

“This is not about me. It is about the people of Benue and the need for leadership that is responsive to their aspirations and committed to grassroots development,” he said.

Party leaders and stakeholders who attended the primary election commended Mathew’s contributions to community development and philanthropy, particularly in Ogbadibo Local Government Area and other parts of the state.

They noted that his emergence reflected the confidence party members have in his leadership capacity and ability to mobilize support ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

A party stakeholder, Maureen Mngusuur Egum, expressed confidence in Mathew’s candidature, stating that his experience in human capital development and community service would help promote unity and strengthen relationships among the various ethnic groups in the state.

According to her, Mathew possesses the qualities required to bridge existing divides and provide purposeful leadership, adding that his emergence as the NDP governorship candidate is a positive development for Benue State.

Another party stalwart, Ortserga Terkula David, also expressed confidence in Mathew’s candidature, noting that his background in community service and human capital development would foster greater unity across the state.

He urged the governorship candidate to prioritize the development and welfare of women, youths, and children, particularly in the areas of healthcare, education, and social empowerment.

The NDP said it remains committed to presenting a people-oriented agenda and strengthening its grassroots support base as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
