From Uche Nnorom, Makurdi
The National Democratic Party (NDP) has officially affirmed Hon. Ochigbo Mathew, an Idoma-born politician and philanthropist, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Benue State.
Notably, the NDP stands out as the only political party to select a candidate from the Idoma ethnic group for the state’s top seat.
Mathew was returned unopposed during the party’s governorship primary election held in Makurdi, the state capital.
Reacting to his emergence, Mathew described the endorsement as a solemn responsibility to serve.
He pledged to implement policies centered on inclusive governance, economic growth, and social cohesion.
“This is not about me, it is about the people of Benue and the need for leadership that is responsive to their aspirations and committed to grassroots development,” he stated.
Party leaders and stakeholders praised Mathew’s extensive contributions to community development and philanthropy, particularly within the Ogbadibo Local Government Area and across Benue State.
They noted that his consensus victory reflects the party’s absolute confidence in his leadership and his ability to mobilize voters ahead of the 2027 polls.
Egum Maureen Mngusuur, a party stakeholder), expressed strong confidence in Mathew’s candidacy, noting that his background in human capital development and community service makes him uniquely qualified to bridge ethnic divides, foster unity, and provide purposeful leadership for the state.
Similarly, Ortserga Terkula David (Party Stalwart), echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that Mathew’s track record will help strengthen inter-ethnic relations. He further urged the candidate to prioritize the development of women and youth, as well as healthcare and welfare programs for children.
With Mathew’s official nomination, party faithful view his candidacy as a progressive step toward a more unified and prosperous Benue State.
