NEMA DG takes disaster risk awareness campaign to Abuja primary school

The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has taken the agency’s disaster risk reduction awareness campaign to pupils of LEA Primary School, Durumi, Abuja, as part of efforts to promote safety consciousness among children.

The outreach programme, held on Thursday, April 30, 2026, was aimed at educating young Nigerians on disaster prevention and emergency preparedness from an early age.

Head of NEMA Press Unit, Manzo Ezekiel, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday.

According to the statement, Mrs. Umar engaged the pupils in an interactive session where she highlighted the importance of basic safety habits and simple preventive measures children can adopt both at home and in school.

She also taught them practical ways to reduce risks associated with common emergencies such as fire outbreaks, flooding and unsafe play environments.

The NEMA boss urged the pupils to remain alert to dangers around them and report hazards promptly to teachers, parents or other responsible adults.

She explained that disaster risk reduction should not be left to emergency responders alone, stressing that awareness, preparedness and responsible behaviour at the community level are key to preventing disasters.

Mrs. Umar further noted that introducing children to disaster preparedness concepts early in life is critical to building safer and more resilient communities.

The session featured a question-and-answer segment where pupils received further guidance on disasters and the roles they can play in promoting safety in their homes, schools and communities.

The visit, according to the agency, reflects NEMA’s broader strategy of extending disaster risk reduction education beyond formal institutions to communities, schools and households nationwide in order to strengthen national resilience.
