The Network for Justice has called for a high powered Judicial Commission of enquiry into the mass killings of defenceless civilians, including children, engaged in peaceful rally in Zaria on the 25th July, 2014 by the Nigerian Army.
The group, in a statement issued yesterday by its Executive Director, A.S Muhammed, said the military action was not acceptable even in war situation.
“Such conducts by the military, who are expected to exhibit very high level of professionalism and patriotism, makes the institution lose its respect and support among the public”.
It said such act shouldn’t have taken place in an environment where the military has a lot of facilities, adding that such action ridicule the government and the military.
The network said that the Commission will be the only way “to identify the truth, punish the guilty and redress the aggrieved. Without this, the government risks the danger of being charged at the International Criminal Court, for condoning war crimes in a nation that has been traumatised by insurgency, terrorism and violent crimes”.
