NGO creates awareness on ‘waterless’ toilet model in Kuje

A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) based in Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Women Friendly Initiative (WFI), has organized a sensitization and training workshop on the management and maintenance of an innovative waterless toilet model, in the area.

Speaking during the training workshop, the principal investigator in charge of WFI, Dr. Awasighe Frances, stated that the waterless toilet would go a long way to solve the problem of sanitation challenges as well as generate income for self – sustenance of the complex.

According to him, WFI piloted an innovative project took a year of dogged research and production process, which aims at finding a lasting solution to a lot of environmental challenges being experienced in some parts of FCT and other urban slums in the country at large.

He said that the training workshop was targeted at the poor sanitation challenges resulted from indiscriminating disposal of human wastes in open places especially in urban slums, by using community oriented, culturally acceptable as well as user – friendly waterless toilet, in Kuje modern market.

He explained that the waterless toilet was combined with the innovativeness of non – use of water for flushing with conversion of fecal matter and urine to compost manure for enhanced food security.

He further disclosed that plans are underway to hold a workshop on logistic management of the toilet as well as mobilization and creation of awareness in the market and public places in Kuje, for the use and sustenance of the waterless toilet.

He stressed that the training would focus on the behavior change communication strategies for personal and environmental sanitation in Kuje and its environs.

Earlier, the representative of Kuje Area Council, Alhaji Mohammed Lamorade, who declared the workshop open, commended the leadership of the NGO for their initiative.

Peoples Daily reports that the mentor of WFI project, Prof. Mynepalil Sridhar, amongst other things extensively enlightened participants at the workshop on the operational modalities of the toilet.
