NGO gives 120 persons free eye treatment in Bauchi

A Non-Governmental Organisation in Bauchi state called ‘KAURA Community Elders Initiative’ founded by the minister of the Federal Capital Territory [FCT] Senator Bala Mohammed has offered free eye surgery to about 120 blind and visually impaired people in Ningi local government area of the state.

The Chairman of the KAURA Community Elders Initiative, Alhaji Musa Galadiman Gora, made the disclosedyesterday, during the closing ceremony of the exercise.

He explained that the gesture was part of efforts by the NGO to bring succour to the visually impaired, who cannot afford eye operation thereby remaining helpless and to live with blindness.

He disclosed that the charity organisation has spent the sum of N3 million for the exercise, which lasted for 10 consecutive days, promising that the gesture would be extended to all the 20 local government areas of the state.

Also speaking, the supervising surgeon, Dr. Hadi Bala Yahaya explained that among those the doctors operated on included a four year-old boy, Hussaini Usman and a 16 year-old girl, Ramatu Madaki, both of whom were born with blindness, adding that the patients can however see after the successful surgery.

In an interview with some of the beneficiaries, Binta Alhassan, 80 year-old and Habiba Usman 30, they expressed gratitude to the NGO for the gesture, confirming that before the operation, they had never thought that their sight would be functional again.

The surgery, which took place at Ningi General Hospital, was carried out by specialists from the Bayero University Teaching Hospital, Kano.
