The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) and the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) have forged an understanding on the ease of driving and licensing for diasporans upon their arrival in Nigeria.
This agreement was made during a courtesy call by members of the FRSC, led by Assistant Corps Commandant (ACC) Owoechukwu Chukwuna, at the office of Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/CEO, NiDCOM on Monday, in Abuja.
According to the Assistant Corps Commandant, the exercise is aimed at creating a hitch-free process for diasporans to obtain their National Driver’s License during their stay in Nigeria.
The FRSC has established the Reciprocity Scheme in the US, some European countries and other countries, to afford Nigerians moving abroad, with valid National Driver’s License, the ability to drive cars (using the right-hand side) abroad without reapplying to go for another driving course.
Receiving the delegates on behalf of the Chairman, Engr. Dr Yakubu Sule Bassi, the Secretary to the Commission, said that the visit is very timely, as the Commission proposes many events later in the year (such as the Inaugural Diaspora Focal Point Officers’ Meeting, the National Diaspora Day amongst others), and would, no doubt, need the Corps in ensuring that the FCT roads are traffic-free during these events.
The Secretary gave the assurance of the Commission’s support to the FRSC in the areas of Public Enlightenment on Road Safety adherence.
He however, suggested that the FRSC can take the time for in-house training for NiDCOM staff on Safe Driving, as part of the Commission’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
