Niger Boat mishap kills over 30, 50 rescued, others still missing

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency, NSEMA, said 30 people were reportedly killed in a boat mishap in Borgu local government area of Niger state.
The report added that 50 people were rescued while several others were missing.
It was gathered that the incident occurred on Tuesday, 2nd September 2025 at about 11:30am, due to over loading.
Also, eye witnesses attributed it to collision with a tree stump in the river.
NSEMA in a statement issued yesterday by the agency’s Director General, Alhaji Abdullahi Baba Arah, said he received a report of boat mishap incident at Gausawa community in Malale ward of Borgu LGA.”
The Director General added that the Desk Officer who led the search and rescue operations, noted that the boat took off from Tugan- Sule community in Shagunu ward with 90 passengers on board heading towards Dugga for a condolence visit.
Findings revealed that 29 dead bodies have been recovered while 50 persons were rescued alive and 2 people still missing at the time of filling this report.
The search and rescue operations are still on going for possible recovery of missing persons.
