Nigeria battle Cameroon in Africa Women Handball Championship quarter-final

Date:

Nigeria will play host Cameroon in the quarter-final of the Africa Women Handball Championship in Tuesday.
The qualification of the National Women Handball Team was confirmed after they defeated Kenya 26-21 in their last group to qualify as one of the two best losing teams.
The Coach Rafiu Salami tutored side had lost their first two matches to DR Congo and host Cameroon before a win against Kenya ensured they finish 3rd in group B.
NIgeria’s qualification, however, was on the basis of the first two games played and not the win over Kenya and Guinea’s win over Madagascar on game day 3 also didn’t count.
Guinea and Nigeria were ranked on the strength of the games played against the top two qualifying as Cape Verde could only get judged against the top two qualifying side after their group got depleted due to the withdrawal of Algeria.
That was why the 2 points gotten from the win didn’t reflect on the third place rankings table where teams eventually qualified as first third placed team and second third placed team respectively on the ground of their goal difference gotten from their goals for and against and not points.
A win against Cameroon will ensure Nigeria get to semi final since they last qualified for the top 4 in the 1992 edition held in Morocco (many of the current team members weren’t born then) and they will also qualify for the World Handball Championship later in the year in Spain.
