Nigeria has officially launched its national Digital Switchover Platform (DSP) project under the landmark “Big Picture Initiative,” signaling a monumental shift in the country’s digital transformation agenda.
Supported by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, the launch transitions the nation from analogue to digital broadcasting, establishing a unified national communications framework engineered to guarantee equitable access to information, education, and digital infrastructure across the country.
Opening the historic event, Dr. Charles Ebuebu the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in Nigeria declared that the launch represents far more than a mere technical upgrade; it introduces a new national communications architecture.
“The big picture is far greater than technology, it is a national vision,” the DG stated, detailing an architecture built to democratize information, unlock opportunities for content creators, empower local manufacturers, and position Nigeria as Africa’s leading digital broadcast system.
The DG emphasized that Nigeria has decisively moved beyond ideas into full implementation and delivery.
Formally launching the platform on behalf of the Federal Government, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, praised the profound institution-wide synergy that actualized the milestone.
Idris committed to leveraging the platform to foster a broadcasting ecosystem that is deeply inclusive, innovative, and sustainable.
Detailing the infrastructural backbone powering this transition, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, explained that the platform serves the vision of a $1 trillion national economy.
Tijani revealed massive ongoing digital infrastructure deployments across the country.
He said Nigeria is actively deploying 90,000 kilometers of fiber optic open-access infrastructure to connect businesses, public services, and local communities.
According to him, as the only nation in the West African sub-region possessing its own sovereign satellite, the President has approved immediate investments into two new advanced satellites to expand digital services and communication capacities.
He added that this coupled network will extend broadcasting and digital services past Nigeria’s borders, allowing neighboring countries along the border to plug in and benefit.
Representing the National Assembly, the Special Guest of Honour and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Right Honourable Benjamin Okezie Kalu, addressed the social imperatives of the project.
Kalu noted that for Nigeria—a country with a population surpassing 230 million people—digital inclusion is fundamentally a matter of national equity and social justice.
According to Kalu, the switchover directly unlocks a valuable economic “digital dividend” by freeing up analog spectrum that will be repurposed to expand broadband, deepen wireless connectivity, and strengthen national security.
“Under the leadership of Speaker Right Honourable Abbas Tajudeen, the 10th House of Representatives is aggressively steering legislative reforms—covering data protection, cyber security laws, and updated spectrum management—to secure the country’s digital asset base.”
Also speaking, Chairman of the Broadcasting Organizations of Nigeria (BON), Senior High Chief Tony Akiotu, noted that the national rollout effectively culminates an industry journey spanning slightly over 15 years.
The BON Chairman explained that Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) will operate side-by-side with the Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite system in a “dual illumination” format, a setup poised to generate extensive employment opportunities across the domestic film and music sectors.
Outlining the total socioeconomic scope of the project, Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen, the Managing Director and CEO of the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT), indicated that the project aims to standardize high-quality broadcast infrastructure across approximately 40 million homes.
Serving as the primary technical partner, NIGCOMSAT is deploying its satellite architecture to completely bridge connectivity gaps, ensuring that remote and rural communities are fully integrated into the fast-evolving digital economy.
