Nigeria prisons undergoing transformation – NPS boss

The Controller-General of the Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS), Zakari Ibrahim has said that the Prison is seriously undergoing transformation, especially under the present administration.

Zakari gave this indication yesterday, in a statement issued by the Prisons Public Relations Officer (PRO), Ope Fatinikun, while reacting to an interview by Barr Giwa Amu Igbono that the prisons are currently in a state of shame.

Igbono, a senior partner, Stephen and Solomon foundation, in an interview with a national daily (notPeoples Daily), said the prisons authorities were not doing much to better the lots of the inmates.

Reacting to the interview, the statement said Igbono last visited a prison formation, Kwale, in Lagos a few years ago and couldn’t have been more qualified to speak about the state of prisons in the country.

It said the current admiration has upgraded the state of the prisons in the country and that fleets of cars have been purchased to ease movement of inmates to the court.

“Currently, prisons inmates across the country are also undergoing degree programmes at the National Open University, with twelve inmates at Enugu Centre, eighteen at P/Harcourt Centre, Sixteen at Lagos and four at Awka centre .

“It is gratifying to note that an inmate, Mr. Paul Chukuma Okoye, from Maximum Prisons, Kirikiri recently graduated from the National Open University and additional nine inmates are almost through with their degree programmes.
