Nigeria has been re-elected into Part II of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) council.
In a statement on Saturday, Tunde Moshood, media aide to Festus Keyamo, minister of aviation and aerospace development, said the re-election took place at the ongoing 42nd ICAO assembly in Montreal, Canada.
Moshood said Mahmoud Ben-Tukur, Nigeria’s candidate, emerged victorious after an election involving 11 other African nations, winning 163 votes out of 185 eligible member states.
“Engr. Ben-Tukur, who has been Nigeria’s Representative to ICAO, will continue to occupy Nigeria’s seat on the Council, further strengthening the nation’s role in global aviation governance,” the minister’s aide said.
“He was re-elected with an impressive 163 votes out of 185 eligible member states, demonstrating strong international confidence in Nigeria’s leadership and contributions to the aviation sector.”
Moshood said Nigeria’s aviation diplomacy and global alliances within the ICAO family have yielded a resilient outcome, with the country being re-elected alongside Egypt and South Africa.
According to the media aide, Keyamo spearheaded an intensive campaign for Nigeria’s candidate and participated in the voting sessions for both Part I and Part II of the council elections on behalf of Nigeria.
He said the minister described the victory as a proud moment for Nigeria and Africa, noting it reaffirms Nigeria’s commitment to growing international civil aviation and promoting sector safety, security, and sustainability.
Moshood added that Nigeria’s continued presence on the ICAO council enables the nation to actively shape global aviation policies and standards while promoting African interests.
