Nigerian youths condemn arrest of Fulani leader Bello Badejo

Date:

The Nigerian Youths for Good Governance (NYGG) have expressed outrage over the recent arrest and detention of Alhaji Bello Badejo, a prominent leader in the Fulani community and a noted advocate for peace and development.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the NYGG’s Executive Director, Alhaji Ado Mohammed, revealed that Badejo was taken into custody by soldiers on December 9, 2024, under questionable circumstances.

This marks the second time Badejo has been detained without justification, following a similar incident in January 2024 when he was held for nearly five months.

The group described the detention as a blatant violation of Badejo’s fundamental human rights and called for an immediate investigation into the soldiers’ actions.

“Alhaji Bello Badejo has been accused of offenses he is not guilty of,” the statement read.

“As a respected Fulani leader, he has dedicated himself to improving his community through peace-building initiatives and development projects, including plans to establish a mosque and market to benefit his people.”

The NYGG criticized the detention as an attempt to malign Badejo’s character and silence his lawful contributions to his community.

The group expressed concern over reports that Badejo is being held in inhumane conditions, denied access to family and friends, and subjected to treatment that has worsened his health.

Calling on the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, the NYGG demanded an urgent inquiry into the circumstances of Badejo’s arrest and the prosecution of those responsible.

“We demand the immediate release of Alhaji Bello Badejo and urge the Federal Government to ensure he receives the medical care he urgently needs,” the statement continued.

The NYGG warned against further violations of Badejo’s rights and pledged solidarity with his family and community in seeking justice.
