Against the backdrop of the mass and indefinite suspension of resident doctors by the Federal Government, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has secured a court injunction to stop the government from carrying out the action.
Resident doctors, who formed about 70% workforce in government hospitals, had earlier gone on a 2-week warning strike, before joining the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) on a national industrial action, which lasted for 55 days.
Following the action by the doctors, who refused to call-off the strike despite the odds, the federal government, announced the mass sack of over 16,000 resident doctors, ordering the ministry of health to send the sack circulars round government hospitals.
However, the NMA has moved against the action, by getting a court injunction to restrain the federal government, from carrying out the action.
The association said, ““We’ve secured court injunction against implementation of the circular suspending residency training programme and sack of residents; all the CMDS/MDs are expected to be served within the next 36 hours.”
