The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Lagos Branch, has impeached its Chairman, Dr. Babajide Saheed, over alleged repeated violations of the association’s rules.
The decision was reached yesterday during an Emergency General Meeting held in Lagos, where members voted by secret ballot to remove Saheed from office.
Following the outcome, the 1st Vice-Chairman, Dr. Temidire Ewonowo, automatically assumed office as the new Chairman in line with the NMA constitution.
Ewonowo said the infractions included Saheed’s failure to convene an Emergency General Meeting requested by affiliate heads within the stipulated seven days, walking out of a duly constituted meeting on Jan. 13, 2026, and submitting an unratified delegate list.
He added that referring members to a disciplinary committee based on decisions not approved by the State Executive Council and congress also contributed to the removal.
According to him, 93 members voted in favour of the impeachment, four voted against, while three votes were invalid, with 112 members and nine affiliate heads present at the meeting.
Ewonowo affirmed that the process complied with the association’s rules, noting that the Emergency General Meeting is its highest decision-making body.
He pledged to prioritise doctors’ welfare, ensure unity within the association, and promote a crisis-free administration.
