The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has dismissed claims made in a viral video comparing the quality and efficiency of petrol sold at NNPC stations to that of MRS Oil.
In a statement on Saturday, Olufemi Soneye, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, described the claims as “misleading, false, baseless, and entirely unfounded.”
He added that the video was a deliberate attempt by “economic saboteurs” to misinform the public and damage NNPC’s reputation.
The video, originally posted on TikTok by @valorreviews, shows a man using two small generators—popularly known as I better pass my neighbour in Nigeria—to test the running time of petrol purchased from MRS and NNPC stations. The video alleges that petrol refined by the Dangote Refinery and sold by MRS lasts longer and is cheaper than the fuel available at NNPC outlets.
According to the video, the user purchased one litre of MRS petrol for N925 at a Lagos station, while NNPC fuel cost N945 per litre.
“In a test, the generator using NNPC fuel reportedly stopped running after 17 minutes and 51 seconds, whereas the generator using MRS petrol lasted 30 minutes—suggesting a significant difference in efficiency.”
However, NNPC refuted these claims, stating that its petrol is carefully formulated to ensure “optimal efficiency, durability, and environmental sustainability.”
Soneye further noted that a significant percentage of PMS sold at NNPC retail stations in Lagos—where the video was made—actually comes from the Dangote Refinery, a strategic partner in promoting local fuel production and energy security.
“NNPC Ltd will take firm legal action against individuals or groups who intentionally spread falsehoods about our brand and operations,” Soneye warned.
He urged the public to disregard such “fabricated content” and rely on verified sources for accurate information.
