Fresh indications of a possible political realignment in Kano State emerged on Tuesday as key leaders of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) held talks with the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.
The NNPP delegation, led by the party’s Kano State chairman, Dr. Hashim Suleiman Dungurawa, congratulated Gwarzo on securing the NDC ticket for the 2027 governorship election and offered prayers for his success at the polls.
The meeting has fueled speculation that the NNPP’s Kano structure could eventually align with the NDC in a bid to challenge the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in the next election cycle.
Political observers have linked the development to the lingering rift between Governor Yusuf and the leader of the Kwankwassiyya Movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a disagreement that has generated uncertainty over the governor’s prospects for a second term.
The possibility of closer cooperation between the NNPP and the NDC has gained further attention following reports that Kwankwaso, currently the NNPP’s vice-presidential candidate, is backing efforts to see the NDC emerge victorious in Kano State in 2027.
While no formal merger or alliance has been announced, the high-profile meeting is likely to intensify discussions about the future political configuration of Kano ahead of the next general elections.
