The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has sensitised residents of Agenebode in Etsako east LGA of Edo state on the rising sea level in the area.

This comes weeks after the federal government announced the reopening of Ladgo Dam in Cameroon to ease out excess water into Nigeria.

In a statement on Friday, the agency said its flood evaluation team observed that the bank of River Niger had moved more than 50 meters towards the community market within the last 18 days.

NOA advised residents to take precautionary measures to mitigate flood risks.

It added that the community has one internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in the area in the event of a flood disaster.

The agency also said some immigrants from Benue state have expressed willingness to relocate if the government provides suitable alternatives.

On his part, George Egabor, traditional ruler of the community, thanked NOA for its sensitisation, while promising to support the agency’s effort.

On September 26, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) said 11 persons were killed and 41,192 persons displaced in a flood incident in the state.

Meanwhile in Borno, 30 persons have lost their lives and more than 400,000 individuals were displaced in a flood incident which occurred on September 10, following the collapse of Alau Dam.
