The Northern Youth Alliance for Security has reacted to the recent oath taken by former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, saying the move has stirred public debate as legal processes involving him continue.

El-Rufai was reported to have sworn on the Holy Qur’an, insisting he did not misuse public funds while in office between 2015 and 2023.

He maintained that his involvement in politics was driven by a desire to serve the people.

In a statement on Wednesday, the group’s Secretary-General, Lawal Hamisu Jankasa, said the timing of the oath had raised concerns among members of the public, particularly as proceedings linked to the former governor are ongoing at the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.

Jankasa noted that the matter is currently before the Federal High Court in Kaduna, stressing that only the judiciary can determine the issues in contention.

He said, “We believe the public should allow the legal process to run its full course. Accountability and transparency remain critical to strengthening democratic institutions.”

The group also urged citizens of Kaduna State and Nigerians generally to remain attentive to governance issues while respecting the rule of law.

“El-Rufai has publicly denied wrongdoing. As stakeholders, we encourage all parties to rely on lawful channels to resolve disputes and clarify any outstanding questions,” Jankasa added.

Efforts to get further comments from aides of the former governor were unsuccessful as of press time.
