The Kaduna State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the state, while also offering an unreserved apology to Channels Television for the assault on one of its cameramen, Mr. Ogbonna Chukwu.
State Commandant Panam Musa made the apology on Monday during a courtesy visit to the Executive Council of the NUJ, Kaduna State Council.
Chukwu was reportedly mistreated by some NSCDC personnels while attempting to enter the venue of the turbaning ceremony for former Vice President Namadi Sambo by the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamali, in Zaria two Saturdays ago.
The incident, which went viral on social media, sparked widespread condemnation.
During his visit, Commandant Musa described the incident as unfortunate and unacceptable, stating that it does not reflect the values of the Corps.
He emphasized that the purpose of his visit was to apologize to Channels Television and reaffirm the long-standing partnership between the NSCDC and the media.
“I am here for two reasons. First, to express our appreciation to the NUJ for its continuous support of the Corps. Journalists have played a significant role in bringing Civil Defense to where it is today.
“Secondly, I am here to offer our unreserved apology to Channels Television for the inappropriate behavior of my personnel during the Zaria incident. It was an act of overzealousness that we do not condone. On behalf of the Corps, I sincerely apologize,” he said.
