Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ade Abolurin has revealed the Corps plan to honour veteran weight lifter, Maryam Usman and 25 other NSCDC officers for winning medals for the country this year.
Abolurin made this known yesterday at the Headquarters of the Corps swhile speaking at a reception organized in honour of the 26 NSCDC athletes. The 26 athletes were among the 351 sports men and women honoured at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja by President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday night.
Most of the athletes won medals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland and African Senior Championships in Marrakesh, Morocco earlier in the year. Others were participants in the African Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana; the World Junior Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA, and the 2014 FIFA Female U-20 Football World Cup in Montreal, Canada.
The list also included athletes in the Partille World Handball Youth Championships, in Sweden; the World Powerlifting championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and the African Shooting Championship in Cairo, Egypt.
Abolurin disclosed: “Honourable Minister is making every arrangement to ensure that we motivate them through elevation of their status. They will get the promotion as soon as things are put in place.”
He however, warned them that the Corps will not tolerate any act of cheating in sports, stressing that anyone found to be using performance enhancement substances will be sanctioned.
