Nasarawa state chapter of Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), is to revive the reading culture amongst students in the state. To this end, the association has planned to organise reading and writing competition for both public and private schools across the state which aim at improving reading and writing skills amongst school children in the state.

ANA chairman, Ismaila Isa Umaisha, stated this yesterday when he led members of the association on a courtesy visit to the management of the state Universal Basic Education Board in Lafia, the state capital.

Umaisha, who said that poor reading culture amongst Nigerians is one of the factors militating against reading performances amongst students at various levels of education, saying all hands must be on deck to remedy the situation.

He opined that the visit was to seek collaboration with management of the education board in order to achieve their aim by reviving reading culture in school children by way of catching them young. According to him, sustainable quality education could not be achieved without the provision of quality education at the elementary level through effective writing and reading. In his remarks, Chairman of the State’s Primary Education Board, Mallam Abdulkarim Abdullahi, commended members of the association for the noble idea, stating that the board would key into the ideal to make it successful.

He lamented over the poor reading culture in the society and called on authors to put national interest first in their publications to encourage reading in schools.
