•Atiku raps leaders for failing to protect citizens

The Kaduna State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ),has condemned the kidnapping of two Journalists and their families in Kaduna by armed men over the weekend and called on the State Security Agencies to take urgent steps to ensure their safe and unconditional release.

In a statement signed by Comrade Asmau Yawo Halilu and Comrade Gambo Santos Sanga, Chairman, and Secretary respectively of the Council, appealed to security agencies in the state to swing into action to rescue the journalists and their families from the kidnappers.

They expressed dismay over the unfortunate abduction of innocent journalists alongside their wives and children, imploring the government at all levels to intensify efforts towards guaranteeing the security of lives and property of the citizens at all times, stressing that the ugly phenomenon of kidnapping in Kaduna and environs is now resurfacing and must be checked to avert the experiences of the recent past.

The NUJ Council also urged all practicing Journalists in the state to be vigilant in their daily activities while praying for the safe return of their abducted colleagues and their families.

Similarly, in a statement signed by Maryam Suka and Muhammad Sabiu, Vice Chairman and Secretary respectively of the NUJ Correspondents Chapel, Kaduna,   declared the incident as  ‘Black Saturday’ for the Chapel.

Recalling the night of the incident, the statement stated, “On Saturday night, tragedy struck our NUJ union, Kaduna Council, and Correspondents Chapel as two of our active members, the Chairman of the Chapel, Abdulgafar Alabelewe of The Nation, and Abdulraheem Aodu of Blueprint, were abducted alongside their family members in the most barbaric and bizarre manner.”
