From Ibrahim Sidi Muh’d, Gusau

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has announced the appointment of Chairman and members of the Organizing Committee for this year’s edition of Milestone Recognition of Media Icons in Nigeria.
This is contained in a statement signed by the National Secretary of the NUJ and made available to newsmen in Gusau Zamfara State capital, saying, the appointments were approved at the recently concluded National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of NUJ held in Abuja and presided over by the National President of the Union, Comrade Alhassan Yahya.
The committee, tasked with the responsibility of identifying and nominating outstanding veteran journalists for recognition, is to be chaired by Fellow of NUJ, Otunba Gbenga Onayiga, who chaired the previous planning committees of the iconic event.
Other members of the committee are, Tukur Mohammed, NUJ Vice President, Zone A, Ibrahim Musa Maizare, Chairman, Zamfara State Council, Rojab Muhammed, Chairman, Yobe State Council, Tonye Yemoleigba, Chairman, Bayelsa State Council, Ismail Ibrahim, Chairman, Jigawa State Council, Leke Adegbite, Chairman, Ondo State Council and Ayuku Pwaspo, Chairman, Plateau State Council.
Others are Nwafor Samson, Chairman, Ebonyi Council, Salihu Mohammed Alkali, Chairman, Nasarawa State Council, Tunde Olalere, Secretary, Lagos State Council, Olayide Awosanya, Assistant Secretary, Lagos State Council and Sylvester Okereke, Veteran Journalist, Lagos NUJ Council.
The Media Icon Committee is expected to identify, screen, and nominate veteran journalists who have distinguished themselves in the profession and in other sectors of national life. Their contributions must have positively impacted the journalism profession and the overall development of the country.
Speaking on the importance of the committee, NUJ National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, expressed confidence in the capacity, experience, and integrity of the members to deliver on their mandate and ensure that deserving individuals are recognised for their excellence, professionalism, and service to humanity.
The Union believes that recognising journalists who have paid their dues in the profession, would promote excellence, deepen journalism practice in Nigeria and encourage greater commitment to national development.
