The Nigeria Union of Journalists says its housing estate, which is partly scheduled to be delivered in December this year is aimed at alleviating the plight of media practitioners in the quest for affordable housing.
While speaking to Peoples Daily on the new innovation for media practitioners in the Federal Capital territory, (FCT) the National Secretary of the association Liman Shuaibu said the scheme was conceived after a careful observation of the housing challenges of media practitioners in the Federal Capital.
“We discovered that access to accommodation is a major challenge, even for media practitioners so we liaised with estate developers, like the First Rotech Group of companies to put together a housing estate at Lugbe, that’s around the Airport road.
The total number of houses intended for the estate is 293, but we are kicking off with a total number of 50 houses of 3 bedrooms flats each, to be delivered by December.”
He added that the accommodation cost of N14. 5 million will be recovered through the National Housing Fund (NHF), stressing that beneficiaries must be contributors with the NHF. “The beneficiaries will have to pay through the NHF and although the deposit of equity
should be to the tune of 30 per cent, but the NUJ has made concession for media practitioners to access the houses if they have made 15 per cent payment of equity.
According to the legal agent for Rotech group of companies, Barister Chijioke Nwakwo, the payment of N14. 5 million however does not include the Certificate of Occupancy, C/O.
