Hundreds of members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and staff of the secretariat on Friday took to the streets of Damaturu to celebrate the scheme’s 53rd anniversary with a colourful rally.
The event began with a road walk from the Damaturu Local Government Secretariat to the Government House, where corps members sang the national anthem alongside the NYSC band.
Addressing participants after the rally, the State Coordinator, Mr. Okochi Okpara, emphasised the continued relevance of the NYSC since its inception.
He highlighted the scheme’s strategic growth, noting that it had evolved from promoting national unity and integration at its founding to focusing more broadly on national development.
Okpara explained that the programme was deliberately kept brief to avoid exhaustion or illness among participants due to the hot weather.
During the refreshment session that followed, participants were urged to conduct themselves in an orderly manner, as the items provided were intended only as light entertainment.
The state coordinator commended colleagues and collaborating partners for their support and commitment toward the successful execution of the event.
He also encouraged attendees to return home safely, freshen up, and enjoy the rest of the day.
