Obi asks Tinubu to retire, says Nigeria heading nowhere

Date:

The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has said President Bola Tinubu should retire from office, insisting that the President no longer has the capacity to govern Nigeria effectively.

Obi stated this during an exclusive interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Sunday, where he expressed concern over the direction of the country under the current administration.

According to him, Tinubu set clear policy goals for his administration, but the reality on the ground shows that Nigeria is moving in the wrong direction.

He argued that even after three months, it had become evident that the country was not making the expected progress.

“As things stand today, Bola Tinubu is leading Nigeria nowhere,” Obi said.

He added, “Yes, I believe he should retire. He no longer has the capacity to do the job. The Bola Tinubu who served as Governor is not the same Bola Tinubu who is President today. He appears tired, and I think he should be allowed to retire in peace.”

Obi also acknowledged comments made by United States President Donald Trump, saying he appreciated them but stressed that Nigeria required much more than what was currently being done to tackle its numerous challenges.

“I am not saying that no effort has been made, but the scale of the challenges we face requires much more,” he said.

While noting that some Nigerians and even families might believe Tinubu had done his best, Obi maintained that the country’s problems demanded stronger leadership.

“My response is simple: considering the magnitude of the crisis confronting the country, his best is not enough. Nigeria needs to move beyond where we are today,” he added.
