Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has disclosed that his recent closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan centred on efforts to reposition Nigeria towards unity, stability, and inclusive development.
Obi, who led a delegation of South-East leaders to Jonathan’s residence on Monday, described the discussions as frank and reflective, noting that they were part of ongoing consultations with key political stakeholders ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He said the meeting focused on the urgent need to address Nigeria’s economic challenges, insecurity, and social divisions through collaborative leadership.
“Our discussions were frank, thoughtful, and anchored on the urgent need to reposition Nigeria on the path of unity, security, stability, productivity, and inclusive governance,” Obi said in a post on X.
He stressed that Nigeria requires leadership driven by competence, character, capacity, and compassion rather than personal ambition.
According to him, the country must shift from a consumption-based economy to a production-driven one that harnesses its human and natural resources for national development.
Obi added that the 2027 general elections present a critical opportunity to reset Nigeria’s direction, calling for leadership that prioritises education, economic empowerment, and national security.
He was accompanied by Igbo leaders, African Democratic Congress (ADC) senators from the South-East, and other political associates.
The meeting reportedly comes amid wider opposition consultations aimed at forging a united front ahead of the next general election.
