Organisers of the Ofada Renaissance Experience have called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts in promoting Ofada rice globally, saying the indigenous delicacy holds immense cultural, nutritional and economic value for Nigeria.
Speaking during the Ofada City Tour held in Abuja, the Founder of Smokeyhut Delights, Damilola Esther Alabi, urged government at all levels to create wider awareness about the health benefits of Ofada rice, especially for diabetic patients, describing it as a healthier alternative to imported brands.
Alabi, who interacted with journalists on the sidelines of the event themed “An Experience of Culinary and Cultural Affairs,” stressed that promoting local dishes such as Ofada would help preserve Nigeria’s cultural identity and foster unity among diverse ethnic groups.
According to her, Ofada rice—traditionally grown in Ogun State—remains one of the richest indigenous foods and is recommended for people managing diabetes due to its nutritional profile.
She noted that despite technological advancements in processing, local producers still undertake manual cleaning to ensure the rice is safe and fit for consumption.
She said, “Ofada rice is more than food; it is medicine for some people. Promoting it will not only boost our culture but also help discourage the consumption of imported foods. Gen Z must learn to embrace what is ours.”
Alabi emphasised that strengthening the local food value chain would empower communities, create employment and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on foreign rice.
Also speaking, the Convener of the Ofada Renaissance Experience, Chef Fapohunda Matilda, said her passion for the indigenous rice inspired her to place it at the centre of the festival.
She lamented that despite its superior nutritional value, Ofada rice still receives less recognition compared to foreign varieties.
“Ofada rice deserves to be in the spotlight. If we don’t appreciate what we have, outsiders will take it, refine it and value it more than we do,” Matilda said.
She added that the event aims to project Ofada rice to the global stage, showcasing its cultural significance and health benefits while encouraging Nigerians to adopt and celebrate indigenous foods.
The organisers noted that continuous promotion, investment and government support would help Ofada rice attain international acceptance and position Nigeria as a key player in the global culinary space.
