The Chairman of Warri North Local Government Council Area of Delta State, Smart Yomi Asekutu, has commended the people of Opuama Community for choosing the path of peace following the recent oil spillage in the area.
Honourable Asekutu gave the commendation when a high power delegation on behalf of the state government visited the community to inspect the level and impacts of the spill.
He said that the Delta State Governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, had highly commend the residents of Opuama community for their patience over the recent oil spillage in the area.
The Governor, Who spoke through the Commissioner for Oil and Gas in the state, Chief Emmanuel Agbadugba, said that the visit was an on the spot assessment of the oil spill which had negatively affected the source of living of the community.
He disclosed that the oil company responsible for the spill had assured them that the relevant environmental impact assessment officials would be around to ascertain the extent of damaged done.
The Governor thanked the people of Opuama community for their patience towards the situation despite the seeming sufferings in their daily fishing activities.
Asekutu, appealed to the management of the oil company to see how they could support and alleviate the burdens of the people, saying,”this is the only source of their livelihood and everybody must join hands to ensure the sustainability of their livelihood,” he said.
