Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo has inaugurated the Senior Executive Course SEC 40 of the nation’s think tank of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies NIPSS.
The vice president charged participants to identify the role of community policing in strengthening Nigeria’s internal security frame work and the gaps in the security architecture of the country.
He equally challenged the participants to provide answers to what model policy options and strategies of community policing in the states and local government and how these have contributed to strengthening the internal security framework and what are the experiences of countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and America in the use of community policing to strengthen their internal security framework.
The vice president who was represented by Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau state pointed out that, there are lessons Nigeria could learn from experiences of these countries, stressing that what policy options, model and strategies could be recommended along with the implementation strategies to strengthen Nigeria’s internal security framework and community policing.
According to him, the theme; “Strengthening internal security framework and community policing in Nigeria: model, policy options and strategies is very important because the primary purpose of governance as enshrined in the constitution is the security and welfare of its citizens noting that the general objective of internal security is to keep peace within our boarders by upholding our laws.
He added that since the advent of the present democratic dispensation it appears that democracy has been wrongly interpreted in some quarters to mean unlimited freedom and unregulated rights of citizens to engaged in unwarranted acts reintegrating that nobody is above the law.
“ Latent internal security threats have gradually metamorphosed into communal and religious violence, armed robbery, political thuggery, assassination, kidnapping, militancy, terrorism, herders farmers conflict and other dastardly act. These threats have had attendant negative consequences on human, economic and infrastructural security and our overall national development.”
Vice President lamented that these internal security challenges pose serious security threats to our corporate existence and shared communal values.
