The minister of education, Mallam Adamu Adamu said there is a need to intensify efforts towards addressing the challenges of the out-of School Children by ensuring that they are in school and learning.
Adamu made the call during the technical meeting to develop new strategies that would enhance effective monitoring and successful implementation of the Better Education Service Delivery for All(BESDA), in Abuja.
Adamu, who was represented by the Minister of education for State, Chukwuemeka Nwajuba said “from the report reaching my table and the realities on the ground, it is clear that our effort is not enough.”
According to him, “Despite the recent efforts by the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to address the menace of the Out-of-School Children, Nigeria is still battling with one of the highest numbers of Out-of-School Children in sub-Saharan Africa.
He said, “I am aware that since inception, the BESDA Programme has successfully enrolled 924,590 out of the previous figures of 10,193,918 Out-of-School Children in Nigeria. I can say authoritatively that the figures have dropped significantly to 9,269,328.
“We must get it right in this country. To get it right means setting our basic education sector on the right path. No nation can achieve economic, social, political, and cultural prosperity without a sound functional educational system.”
