The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has welcomed the safe rescue of pupils and teachers abducted from the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State after 56 harrowing days in captivity.
However, the opposition party has challenged the Federal Government to deploy the exact same urgency, resolve, and intelligence to secure the immediate freedom of other schoolchildren and citizens still held captive in Borno and Kwara states.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC commended the security forces and all stakeholders involved in the Oyo rescue operation, while rejoicing with the traumatized families who had endured nearly two months of waiting.
Despite the breakthrough, the party argued that the national celebration remains incomplete while other vulnerable citizens are seemingly forgotten by the state.
“The pupils abducted in Borno State in May this year remain in captivity, while more than 100 people kidnapped in Kaiama, Kwara State are still in the den of kidnappers several months after.
“We believe that the suffering of these victims deserves the same urgency, determination, as well as the national and international attention that brought the Oriire victims home,”Abdullahi noted.
The ADC warned the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration against normalization of the security crisis, insisting that the government’s primary duty is prevention rather than reactive rescue missions.
The statement read in part, “Every successful rescue is worth celebrating.
“But every kidnapping is also a reminder that the primary duty of government is to ensure that citizens are not abducted in the first place.
“What we must not do is to get accustomed to measuring success by the number of rescue operations this government conducts.”
Furthermore , the opposition party emphasized that true national security means parents sending their children to school without fear, travelers using highways without anxiety, and ordinary Nigerians living free from the constant threat of violent criminals.
It added that meaningful economic growth and foreign investment will remain elusive if kidnapping continues as a recurring feature of national life.
Calling for a total overhaul of the current security strategy, the ADC urged the Federal Government to shift to proactive measures by strengthening intelligence gathering, enhancing inter-agency coordination, and restoring a firm state presence to protect vulnerable communities across the federation.
“Every life matters equally. No victim should be forgotten because they are voiceless or lack vocal champions to keep their story on the headlines and national focus,” the party concluded.
