No fewer than 10 persons were rescued alive on Thursday after a two-storey residential building collapsed near Alakija Bus Stop in Satellite Town along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
The incident occurred on Old Ojo Road and triggered a massive emergency response involving multiple agencies.
The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, said the agency received a distress call at about 11:37 a.m. and immediately deployed rescue teams from the Ijegun-Egba Fire Station.
According to her, emergency responders arrived at the scene around 11:49 a.m. and commenced intensive search and rescue operations.
“The collapsed structure was an occupied residential building. Ten persons have so far been rescued alive with varying degrees of injuries and have been handed over to medical personnel for treatment,” she said.
Adeseye noted that rescue efforts were still ongoing to determine whether additional victims remained trapped beneath the rubble.
Personnel from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Federal Fire Service, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Navy, the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps and the Nigerian Red Cross Society were all involved in the operation.
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the collapse, while investigations have commenced.
Residents and onlookers were urged to stay away from the scene and allow emergency workers unhindered access as rescue operations continue.
Further updates are expected as emergency officials intensify efforts at the site.
