A combination of about 5,000 members defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and the Action Alliance (AA) have joined the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Imo State.
The defectors were received into the APC fold by the leader of the party in the Owerri zone, Prince Lemmy Akankem.
This was contained in a statement sent to journalists on Sunday.
Speaking while receiving the defectors, the APC leader in the Owerri zone, Prince Akankem, attributed the mass defection to the shared prosperity of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s government.
He said “Your defection and registration into our party has afforded you all the opportunity to be bonafide members of our great party, in no distant time PDP will soon empty itself into APC, I assure you today that every one of you will be carried along in the scheme of things”.
Meanwhile, Governor Uzodimma charged the party members to erase the mindset of controlling the party structure and work in service to the people.
The Governor said “As a family, the structure of the party lies within the people and not any individual. We will continue to integrate processes that would be beneficial to every member of the party and for the interest of the electorates. It is on this premise that the National Leadership of our party directed an open congress and we must adhere to it strictly.
“I can go into a room and write a list for you, but I can’t because I want transparency. So if I didn’t do it, please don’t do it. Let transparency rule us.” Uzodimma stated.
