A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu and other political actors against any attempt to rig the 2027 presidential election, warning that the international community is closely monitoring Nigeria’s democratic process.
Pearse issued the warning on Sunday during an interview on Arise Television, where he said electoral malpractice could attract serious global consequences for the country and those involved.
According to him, the era of unchecked election rigging is gradually coming to an end, as international institutions and influential global actors are increasingly unwilling to ignore actions that undermine democracy in Nigeria.
“The whole international world is watching. If you rig the election the way you normally do, you may have Trump coming to get your war chambers. Everybody should be careful,” he said.
The PDP chieftain further noted that the existence of international judicial mechanisms, including the International Criminal Court (ICC), should serve as a strong deterrent to electoral misconduct.
“This is not the first time it has happened. The International Criminal Court is there, so be careful what you do with a rigged election in Nigeria,” Pearse warned.
He expressed confidence that the 2027 general elections would mark a departure from past experiences, insisting that Nigerians would no longer tolerate electoral fraud.
“No, no, no, it will not happen again. 2027 is going to be different,” he stated.
Pearse’s comments come amid increasing political activities and heightened public debate ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition figures and civil society groups calling for transparent, free and fair polls across the country.
