Permanent Secretary for Education of Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mrs. Joy Okeke has expressed profound gratitude to the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria for the beneficial Win-Win cooperation China’s collaborations with Nigeria have produced over time.
Mrs. Okeke made this known Friday at the event of 19th Nigeria Division of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Secondary School Students and the Inter-university Chinese Language Competition held at the China Cultural Centre in Abuja, where participants demonstrated their Mandarin language speaking and understanding prowess.
Okeke said the FCT Schools have well-established Chinese corners, where language, Wushu, Cultural Dances, Lion Dances, Art and Craft, capacity building and numerous bilateral activities takes place annually in promoting China, Nigeria collaborations.
Okeke informed of the Education Secretariat’s preparedness to fully commence the learning of Chinese language in the schools by putting all necessary things in order.
While congratulating Chinese Embassy for the feat, and urging the learners to make good use of the opportunity for human development, Okeke noted it was a pleasure and honour being part of cultural and educational exchanges promotion between the two long time partners, friends and brothers for a better and prosperous future.
In his opening remarks, Cultural Counselor of Chinese Embassy and Director of China Cultural Centre in Nigeria, Yang Jianxing who described the occasion as momentous in the field of language and cultural exchange between China and Nigeria, told the students that their choice to learn Chinese and step onto the “Chinese Bridge” stage was an act of courage and commitment.
While urging them to use the competition as both mirror and motivator, allowing their dreams of mastering Chinese to take root and grow in their formative years, he tasked them on continue deepening the study of Chinese and, in time, stand on an even wider and more magnificent stage.
He assured that the Embassy and the Cultural Center will support Confucius Institutes and Chinese language classrooms in improving the quality of their programs and expanding access to Chinese language learning; to actively build platforms for youth exchanges between the two countries; and to continue holding diverse cultural events so that more Nigerian young people can experience the charm of Chinese culture and carry the torch of China-Nigeria friendship into the next generation.
Director-General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Mr. Mohammed Bulama, who advocated establishment of more Confucius Institutes in Nigerian Universities noted that the expansion and acceptance of Mandarin studies in Nigeria showed the extent of progressive relation between China and Nigeria.
He said the growing popularity of Mandarin in Nigeria was an indication that China, Nigeria partnership was getting stronger by the day in the areas of diplomacy, trade, culture and education.
Bulama informed of Radio Nigeria’s collaboration with Chinese Embassy and the China Cultural Centre to introduce a Mandarin language programme known as NiHao China.
President of the Society of Nigerian Artists, Muhammad Suleiman, who said the competition was an observance of cultural exchange, mutual understanding, People-To-People Exchanges noted the ceremony was an epoch-making event were both cultures of China and Nigeria blend together for better synergy and stronger friendship.
The secondary school competition, themed “Chasing Dreams Through Chinese, Making Every Moment Count,” saw Micheal Uchechi Justina of the Confucius Institute, Nnamdi Azikiwe University emerged overall winner with 95.2 points. Umezurike Favour Chinaetugo came second with 90.6 points, while Okoye Chikadibia Faith came third with 72.6 points.
Emmanuel Faith Mba Orjiugo clinched the first position in the Inter-University Contest with 94 points, while Onyeocha Cecilea Ugochi emerged second with 82.7 points and Okeke Jessica Chinemerem came third with 79.9 points.
