The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has issued a scathing condemnation of the Nigerian federal government’s inaction following a wave of deadly attacks in Plateau State that claimed over 100 lives in a single week.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the group described the violence as “orchestrated” by a known group with a “hidden agenda” and demanded an immediate, large-scale deployment of security forces to restore order.
Signed by NEF spokesperson Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, the statement decried the “silence and inaction” of the government as “unacceptable,” warning that the unchecked mass murder and destruction represent a “national disgrace.”
The forum accused the government of failing in its primary duty to protect lives and property, calling the situation a “damning indictment” of its leadership.
“The magnitude of violence being inflicted on innocent citizens is intolerable,” the statement read.
“The blood of innocent Nigerians cries out for justice, and there must be no sanctuary for those who orchestrate or enable these horrors.”
The NEF urged the government to swiftly apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators, provide adequate compensation to victims and affected communities, and establish an independent investigative panel to probe the attacks.
The forum insisted that the panel’s findings be made public to ensure accountability and prevent further bloodshed.
Expressing solidarity with the people of Plateau State, the NEF extended its condolences to the families of the victims.
“Enough is enough,” the statement concluded. “The time for words has passed—this is a time for bold, decisive, and just action.”
