Plateau state gubernatorial candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gyang Pwajok and his opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) counterpart, Barrister Lalong, have signed an anti election violence pact, promising to caution their supporters against any kind of violence during and after the general elections.
The two governorship contenders signed the commitment yesterday during a meeting with the Plateau state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) , Kwangan Godwin Mbatavbee, the Catholic Archbishop of Jos, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, including other community and religious leaders in the state.
The chairman of the meeting, Ignatius Kaigama, said the aim of the meeting was to ensure that the 2015 polls were conducted in peace and harmony, urging political leaders to admonish their supporters against violence.
In his remarks at the meeting, Pwajok said he was in support of the peace commitment, noting that it was his love for peace that motivated him to sponsor a Bill in the Senate on Reconciliation, Reconstruction and Rebuilding the nation, which he said is currently before the Senate.
Lalong, on his part, said his party was doing everything possible to ensure that its supporters conducted themselves in a peaceful manner, calling on INEC to conduct credible elections.
“For those of us who know Gen. Buhari, we know that he does not tolerate violence and that is the spirit we are imbibing. However, we are mindful of the government of the day, the military and the police should not be allowed to use intimidation”, he said.
