Police crucial to the survival of nation’s democracy, says Yuguda

• Tasks FG, NASS, IGP on good incentives for police

• As ACP Dashuwar receives accolade on his book

Former Governor of Bauchi State, Mallam Isa Yuguda has declared that one of the surest ways the nation’s democracy can survive and thrive is for the country’s police to be provided with adewuate incentives and welfare packages.
This, Yuguda pointed out, would go a long way to encourage the police in the discharge of their constitutionally enshrined duties, effectively and efficiently, without having to succumb to any external influence(s).
The former Governor and erstwhile Minister of Aviation spoke on Tuesday in Abuja at the public presentation of the book: “Police and Administration of Criminal Justice in Nigeria’s Contemporary Evaluation”, authored by ASP Dashuwar T. Abuja.

At the event which attracted a former Governor of Plateau and present Minister of Employment, Labour and Productivity, Mr Simon Bako Lalong, Commissioner of Police Reuben Abibo, who represented the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, Oniru of Iruland in Lagos State, Oba Omogbolahan Abdulwasiu Lawali, AIG Yekini Ayoku (Police Mobile Force),
CP Ibitoye Olayide, CP John Babangida and Barrister Alphonsus Aribo (SAN) among others, the former Bauchi Governor pointed out that the important place occupied by the police under the nation’s democracy can not be overemphasized.
Stressing that the federal government must not neglect the police for whatever reason, Yuguda harped on the pertinent need for the government to invest heavily on the police in the interest of optimum performance.
He specifically called on the government, National Assembly and the Inspector General of Police, IGP, to work towards a collaborative efforts getting good and worthy incentives for the police.
According to him, “the police need to be supported. The National Assembly and the Federal Government should sit down with the Inspector-General of Police to work out this.
“They must not be allowed to be enticed by outsiders.The police also deserve a good retirement package”, he said.
The IG of Police, Egbetokun, who was represented by CP Reuben Abibo lauded the author for his good work.
Egbetokun noted that if there is no documentation, there would not have been evidence of civilization among others, adding, “I thank the author for documentation”.
On his part, the Minister of Employment, Labour and Productivity, Mr Simon Bako Lalong described the book as “fantastic”, and tagged the author as “a fine police officer”.
Lalong particularly hailed the author for his love for knowledge acquisition and his stand, always, for what is just and right.
ACP Dashuwar T. Abuja has LLB, BL, LLM and Ph.D in Law as well as PSC (+).
The book reviewer, Mr Alphonsus Aribo (SAN) stated that it (the book) is, no doubt, is a big addition to the large body of documented work already in existence.
