A high-profile international friendly between Brazil and the United States ended in controversy on Tuesday night as tempers flared in Fortaleza, resulting in eight Brazilian players and staff members being sent off in scenes that overshadowed the Americans’ 1-0 victory.
With Brazil set to host next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, the ill-tempered encounter raised concerns after a match that spiralled out of control both on and off the pitch.
The United States secured victory courtesy of a second-half own goal from Brazilian defender Isabela Chagas, but the result became secondary as disciplinary issues dominated the closing stages.
The tension reached boiling point after Brazil were reduced to nine players before the final whistle. Referee Paola Cebollada Lopez found herself at the centre of the storm, issuing a series of cards that sparked furious reactions from the home side.
Brazil coach Arthur Elias was among those dismissed. Having already received a yellow card in the first half following a dispute over a kit clash, Elias was shown a second booking in the 77th minute after kicking the ball away in frustration. Three members of his backroom staff were also sent off during the heated contest.
The situation deteriorated further in stoppage time when Bia Zaneratto received a second yellow card for pushing American defender Emily Sonnett. Moments later, Tarciane was shown a straight red card after elbowing Sophia Wilson.
Even after the final whistle, the drama continued. Forward Kerolin was dismissed for arguing with the referee, while teammate Ludmila was also shown a red card after sarcastically applauding the official.
The chaotic scenes prompted the intervention of police officers in riot gear, who helped restore order as several Brazilian players confronted the referee.
For the United States, the victory completed an eventful two-match series after Brazil had claimed a 2-1 win in the opening fixture on Saturday.
Despite the heated atmosphere, U.S. coach Emma Hayes attempted to strike a diplomatic tone after the match.

“I have a lot of respect for Brazil and it was an experience I will never forget,” Hayes said.
American midfielder Lindsey Heaps, however, expressed concern about the spectacle, particularly with Brazil preparing to stage the Women’s World Cup in 2027.
“I hope that is not what a World Cup final looks like,” she remarked.
While the friendly was intended as a showcase between two of women’s football’s biggest nations, it ultimately served as a reminder of how quickly emotions can boil over when fierce rivals meet, leaving Brazil with questions to answer ahead of its biggest moment on the global stage.
