Pandemonium broke out in Ajaokuta town in Ajaokuta local government area of Kogi State on Sunday when a trigger happy policeman shot dead a young man in the area, Mohammed Ismail.
The deceased, a father of one, met his untimely death while attending a rally to flag off the formal declaration of one of the chairmanship aspirants in the local government, Abdulrahaman Danasabe, at the football pitch of the Local Government Secondary School, Ajaokuta.
Peoples Daily reliably gathered that the ugly incident occurred around 2 pm in the afternoon while the aspirant who is contesting under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, was unfolding his plans to move the local government forward.
It was while the occasion was going on that the policeman (name withheld), suddenly opened fire, with one of the bullets hitting the deceased’s left rib and bursting out through the right rib.
The development caused confusion in the area as those at the venue of the rally ran for their safety, scampering in different directions to avoid being hit by the hot lead, even as what led to the action of the policeman could not be explained.
However, some people at the occasion said they were not surprised with the behaviour of the policeman, alleging that the law enforcement agent was under the influence of alcohol, as he was said to be “ very high” at the time he committed the act.
Efforts to save the life of the deceased who was described as quite and easy going man by some members of the community, proved fruitless, as he was said to have given up the ghost shortly after he was rushed to a nearby hospital.
The lifeless body of the deceased who was said to be an HND graduate of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, was later committed to mother earth around 7.30 pm on Sunday night.
The spokesman of the state Police Command, Mr. William Aya confirmed the incident when contacted, saying, however, that they are awaiting details of the matter.
