Police prevent attack on CBN, Benin

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has acknowledged the support of the Nigeria police for preventing mob attack on its Complex, Akpakpava road in Benin City, Edo State Capital.

Mr. R.D. Jumbo, Branch Controller of CBN, Benin, said the incident occurred during EndSARS riot in October last year in Edo State where several inmates at Oko and Sapele road Custodial Centres both in Benin were set free by hoodlums.

SARS is the acronym for the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad, a unit of the Nigeria police by the federal Government.

Jumbo said this when he led the management team on a courtesy visit on Edo State Commissioner of police, Mr. Phillip Ogbadu on Wednesday at the police headquarters in the Benin City, Edo State Capital.

SP. Kotongs Bello, spokesman of the Nigeria police, Edo State Command in a statement on Wednesday, conveyed the goodwill of the apex Bank Management to the Commissioner of the State.

According to Jumbo, “The last year #EndSARS protest, the Command ensures that the CBN Benin Branch officers did not suffer any mob attack because Police were readily available during the protest”.

The CBN Controller, appealed to the Commissioner of Police to step up patrol around the bank premises especially during peak hours when loitering and hawking around the apex Bank is on the rise.

He also lauded the remarkable achievements recorded since of the Commissioner of police was Edo State was deployed to the State and thereafter presented a plaque to Mr. Ogbadu.

Responding, the Commissioner of police in the State, Mr. Phillip Ogbadu, sued for cooperation among the Bank Staff, sister security agents and police to wipe out the rising cases of hawking and loitering around the CBN premises.

Ogbadu thereafter directed Deputy Commissioner of police in charge of Operations to ensure routine patrol around the Bank towards ridding the busy route safe.
