Abia State Police Command has confirmed that its officers arrested the National Vice Chairman (South-East) of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Ceekay Igara.
The Command said the arrest was based on a petition written against Igara by the acting state Chairman of the LP, Emmanuel Nwaeze Oti.
In a statement by ASP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer, the Command said Igara was released the same day after writing his statement while investigation continues.
Chinaka said that allegations in the petition include “obtaining by false pretence, impersonation and conducts likely to cause breach of peace”.
Igara was arrested in Aba on Saturday by Police officers while he was having a meeting with members of his faction.
Abia LP members in the camp of national chairman Julius Abure had alleged that the Abia State government was responsible for the arrest of the South-East vice chairman.
But the acting chairman of LP in the State, Emmanuel Nwaeze-Otti has said that his group wrote the petition which led to the arrest.
He said, “Mr. Igara’s arrest stems from a petition we wrote to the Police against him and others over their acts of Extortion and Impersonation of the State chapter of the party.
“That Mr. Igara, by the Constitution of our party has no legal right to usurp or impersonate the office of the State Chairman, having ceased to be the state chairman after his election as the South East National Vice Chairman in March this year.”
