Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, yesterday said unguarded utterances of politicians was helping the terrorists to increase their spate of bombings across the country.
Maku said this yesterday in Abuja while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan.
He said the politicization of the Boko Haram activities in the country only embolden them.
The minister said that the FEC condemned the continued bombing, particularly in the Northern part of the country, and called on politicians to guide their actions and utterances.
“Varieties of opinions among the political class feed into the confidence of terror groups because the objective is to divide public opinion and conveniently penetrate the Nigerian society and destroy it.
“So, we will continue to appeal to politicians to begin to think again and understand that the challenge is not to the advantage of anybody. Politics aside, we must save our country and protect Nigeria first before we can realise our dream within the society”, he said.
Maku also called on the 19 Northern governors to reorganise and sensitise the people in their various states on how how best to deal with terrorism.
“This means that today to deal with terror, every of the 19 Northern states must reorganise their people from the smallest unit of the smallest village to hamlet, to wards, to towns, to districts.
“There must be a proper organisation of communities for proper information about movement of people and activities that could lead to destruction of lives and property”, he said.
He said the federal government and the security agencies have been working assiduously to tackle the challenges.
The minister said the role of the state governors was important in tackling terrorism because the terrorists were operating at the local level.
Maku also reiterated that the war against terror belonged to all Nigerians and required the cooperation of every citizen.
